It is not possible for me to comment on this novel without also commenting on the wonderful 1965 movie based on it (and one of those few instances where the movie did complete justice to the story, with small and not so small (the ending) changes which improved upon it. The characters are painted through their dialogue in this novel so beautifully that there was little need to change any of it for the movie. Being a Checkhov afficianado, I like my good ole' depressing novel that doesn't rely on a Hollywood happy ending...but the gut wrenching ending of this novel was even off the charts for me. However....still a great touching novel with deeply defined tragic characters. Deepest gratitude, awe, and respect for Elizabeth Hartman, who will forever be kindly remembered for her wonderful portrayal of Selina. Read the novel. Watch the movie. Enjoy this timeless story.

Fantastic book & seller!!
I read the book and watched the movie - the former is always better of course, but the movie's well-made to. The book portrays very well what it is like to be blind, without being sentimental about it.
I truly love this book! Once I started reading the book it was hard to put down. I read it all the way through because it really caught my attention.
Love this book, it is a very quick read because you don't want to put it down.
The transport was perfect. I'm glad that I got still the chance to order this book. I've just seen the movie before.
I read this for a college class comparing books and movies made from those books. This was a wonderful place to begin learning about my fellow students. Younger people did not understand the book, or the movie. As a snapshot from the past, it acted as a place to begin building awareness of how much progress has occurred since the Civil Rights Movement, both in individual understanding and societal acceptance. Those of us who do remember those old days, were able to provide some validation for the story. And it IS a wonderful story, told with simple strength.
I love the movie so I decided to get the book. I loved it up to the ending. It did not end like the movie where you thought they would eventually end up together. I am a sucker for a happy ever after ending. Other than that I loved it!! )
