In this stand alone novel, we get to meet Sugar, he is a thief by trade who is falsely accused of rape, the alibi which would clear his name can't be used as he was committing a crime when the rape was supposed to have occurred, Sugar goes to prison for 5 years and when he gets out, he visits the mastermind behind the burglaries for his share of the theft. What he learns from the meeting sets the story rolling. Now I have been reading Andrew Vachss's books for many years and found his early Burke books to be ultra-dark (ok, more likely jet black) in tone and very enlightening into the habits of lowlifes. Unfortunately I felt the standard of the Burke books declined as the years progressed and this decline continues with The Weight.
My problem is that there is altogether too much confusion with the dialogue where the lead character says something that the other doesn't understand or misinterprets and in turn, Sugar gets confused with information given to him. This just feels awkward and unlikely, really distracts me from the book.
That being said, Vachss does give some interesting information on life in prison, that was worth 2 stars to me,
Overall, I felt the book was a weak effort based on the standards I have for the author, someone who does good work in his professional life.

The Weight A Novel Andrew Vachss 9780307379191 Books Reviews
Vachss prose is undeniably strong. In the end the knock out punch is as always Behavior is Truth. His world he shows is about exactly how promises mean something even if one must change his/her course in life. It is finding honor, integrity, and truth and carrying it out to the knock out punch.
Excellent character development. This was a fast easy read. This book is full of twists and turns. The ending was completely unpredictable.
This isn't Vachss' best work, but even when he's mailing it in it beats anything most crime fiction authors can do on their best day. If you're a fan, or not, pick it up.
Andrew vachss is a fantastic author I'm collecting everything of his that I can find.
I love Andrew Vachss' BURKE series. So I assumed I'd like WEIGHT with different characters.
Not so. I forced myself thru the do-it-yourself type of book to help others understand the 'honor' between inmates/thieves in prison.
I would not recommend this is a first time read of Andrew Vachss' books... it doesn't do him justice.
Having read all of Mr. Vachss's work, I can say that I've yet to be disappointed. With "The Weight", we are taken over some familiar ground and some not so familiar (to those who have traveled with Mr. Vachss). As in many of his books, some of the core elements are to be found in what *isn't* said. In this respect, I found this one of Mr. Vachss's more subtlety crafted stories. Judging from a few reviews here, some people are missing what doesn't smack them in the face.
What I could not help but notice in going through some of the reviews, both of this book and Haiku, were several negative reviews that appear have been put together using the same template, e.g. Jason Hashimura, Geography Fan, Grumpy Old Man, et. al. All claim to have "read every Vachss book and loved them all until this". Curiously, none of these humans have posted a single review of a Vachss book until now. No agenda here, right??
Somehow alike to the other works of Andrew Vachss and somehow different, this is the story of a thief who takes the fall for a burglary- he "takes the weight." On release he comes around to understanding how his "event planner" Solly manipulated him. He falls in love, and he matures. Chicanery unravels, and turnabout takes shape.
Vachss themes of finding moral justice in an unjust world, of making justice through personal responsibility, choice and action, all run strongly through this book as his others.
The characters and events of this book bring back fond memories of Max, the Prof, the Mole, Michelle and others who readers came to enjoy and now have been retired. They are not imitated and the whole setting and story and cast are all fresh. But the thematic elements satisfyingly rise again.
