an excellent read. great story with a fantastic twist.......... or two. good characters and plot development.always keeps you guessing. superb imagery and an excellent view of hong kong(anybody who has been to hong kong will instantly relate to the scenes from that part of the book). as it says on the back its really dark but enjoyably so and you really feel as though you are there with the characters. it finishes well and is quite uplifting actually without you even realising it or thinking that thats how your going to feel after reading it. i really enjoyed the characters development through the book and the relationships with the characters.its a real page turner you want to find out what is happening the language used is very colourful in the way that books should be i have not read somethign like that for a while it really takes you on a journey of language there is not enough writing like this anymore.some amazing quotes and some genuinely fantastic sections of writing!!!!funny at times and tragic at others it really is one of the best books i have read for a very very long time!!! its a must buy and i could not recomend it highly enough. i have already read it again. great work and i look forward to more from the author
Fantastic! I loved reading this book. I was torn between racing through pages wanting to see how it ended and putting it down so I didn't finish it too quickly. Perfectly paced, never a dull moment, dutch is at once terrifying, heartbreaking, exciting and absorbing.

The story focuses on a family dealing with past traumas. The book takes readers between warm, cozy memories of a beloved childhood home, Hong Kong's back alley nightlife, and a therapist's office. From drug binges and therapy sessions, we learn how much this family loved each other and how hard it is to deal with the past. All the characters in the story add insight and clarity to the situation, but just when you think you've got it all figured out, the author takes you on an unexpected turn that both shocks and satisfies.

There are subtle things I liked too -- the descriptions of Hong Kong are vivid and engrossing (I felt like I was right there along side the characters), the language is pitch perfect (including profanities and slang) for the generation it portrays, and the font in the book was refreshingly different, but easy to read.

I look forward to reading whatever Desplaces writes next. Definitely recommended!
