It's the near future and the Earth has been decimated by war and pollution. The world is run by huge corporations (multis) whose chosen employees adhere to rigid, stylized rules for dressing, working, and living. Most people, however, live in extensive, dangerous, poverty-ridden slums called The Glop. A few towns that are able to create and sell original technology to the multis remain free. People around the world have access to an extensive computer network into which they can project themselves to obtain information, do research, play games, communicate, and so on. However, users of the network can be cyber-attacked and even killed so defensive computer technology is in high demand. As the story opens, Shira, an employee of the Yakamura-Stichen (Y-S) corporation has divorced her husband and lost custody of her son, Ari. Devastated, Shira returns to her original home in Tikva, a free Jewish town. There she lives with her beloved grandmother Malkah - a whiz at designing protective computer technology, and takes a job with Avram - a scientist who has created a humanoid cyborg called Yod, designed to protect the townsfolk from corporate raiders and assassins who want to co-opt its technology. Shira's childhood boyfriend Gadi, who broke her heart, is also back in town, having been suspended from his job creating stimmies (recreational interactive holograms). Much of the story revolves around Yod, who develops desires and emotions - essentially becoming more of a person - as he works with Malkah, Shira, and other townspeople. As the story proceeds the Y-S corporation perpetrates various shenanigans in an attempt to get their hands on Yod, going so far as to use Shira's child, Ari, as bait. Meanwhile, in alternate chapters, Malkah relates a story to Yod about a medieval Jewish ghetto in Prague where the rabbi created a Golem (a powerful clay being) to protect the ghetto from raids staged by the surrounding Christian population. Like Yod, the Golem developed the characteristics of a human. The book examines the question of what it means to be a 'real person' and whether an artificially created being has rights. I thought the various characters in the story were well-written and interesting and I cared about their lives and what happened to them. I also enjoyed the story though I felt it should have ended with more of a bang instead of a fizz. It's a good book though, and I recommend it, especially to fans of sci-fi cyberpunk literature.

He She and It A Novel Marge Piercy Books Reviews

Shira works for a large Multi (a domed city in the ruins of the world that houses a specific corporation - in Shira's case the Y-S Corporation), and has recently split up with her husband Josh and is involved in an ugly custody battle over their son Ari. Shira blames herself for going the conventional way of marriage and childbirth for part of her problems. But when the Y-S Multi grants full custody of Ari to Josh, and then moves them offworld to Pacifica Platform where she cannot visit, Shira gives up all hope and returns to her hometown, the free city of Tikva near the volatile and poisoned seas. She's welcomed back by her grandmother Malkah, who raised her from birth rather than her natural mother Riva. Malkah works with old Avram, on accessing the Base (or Net) and has been secretly building a cyborg to be as human as possible.

Shira has to deal with old feelings, a very young and strong love, for Avram's son Gadi, also back in Tikva for some legal reasons involving the "stimmies" he creates. (like virtual reality games). Shira is distracted from Gadi by the presence of Yod, Avram and Malkah's cyborg. She forms a deep love for Yod as she helps along with his programming. But Y-S has learned of Yod, and will use any means necessary, even Shira's son Ari, to get their hands on him.

Interspersed throughout the storyline are tales that Malkah has programmed for Yod to read, of Prague in 1600 and a scientist named Jonah who created a golem made from clay to protect the ghettos from the pogroms. Like Yod falling for Shira, so did Joseph the golem fall for Jonah's granddaughter Chava.

'He, She, And It' is a unique novel of open prejudices. Human feelings abound, even amongst the non-human characters. The characterizations and descriptions are terrific, but the storyline is a little slow, and the ending far too drawn out to be climactic at all. I enjoyed 'He, She, And It' because is was written with a good melding of SciFi and love story. I recommend the book but don't expect to be able to zip through it. Enjoy!
You cannot record this information in boxes, but the book has two narrations, one in first person and the other in third person.
I've learned that even the author dislikes the cover.
I've started a second read-through, which reveals that this is a wonderfully-written book, a terrific science fiction novel set in the mid-twenty-first century when the air has become thoroughly toxic, technology has invaded people's lives in ways that are a) intriguing and b) dangerous, and corporations have replaced cities and in some cases nations as power centers. The main story line has to do with a cyborg (he or it?) created to be a weapon, as was the legendary golem of Prague in 1600. We are using this book with college freshmen. Published in 1991, He, She and It correctly predicts the state of technology, global climate change, and relations between men and women, corporations and citizens as they have indeed evolved so far. The students are interested, both in the issues and in the book.
I don't write book reviews, but as this is the one book I feel the need to re-read every10 year or so, I thought I should do so this time. I recently suggested this book for my book club, as I have always wanted to be able to discuss it with a group. They were reluctant, not being into science fiction, but agreed and they all loved the book. And unlike many books we all liked it still led to a good discussion. I always recommend this book to my friends.
